#DidYouKnow Dorothy Tyler was the first known American woman to race as a jockey. A New York Times report from July, 1907 states that 14-year-old Tyler won a horserace in her hometown of Joplin, Missouri. Riding her own horse, she allegedly beat a professional jockey known as McDowell and another male jockey named Will Brown. The report also noted that she was an all-around athlete and no boy her age in Joplin matched her in physical strength.
