Dorothy Segal, 1st Female Veterinarian

‪#‎DYK‬ Dorothy Segal was one of the first female veterinarians to graduate from a veterinary program, in the US. Segal graduated in 1943 from Michigan State University's Veterinary Program and was one of only two women to do so that year. What made Segal especially unique is that she was interested in small animals. At the time most veterinarians only practiced on larger animals, usually tied to farming. Segal, who was trained to work on large animals, preferred working on small animals. Customers were often not fond of a woman treating their animals. In one instance a farmers asked Segal why he had not been "warned" a woman would be sent. Many people didn't believe women were strong enough to hold a horse or cow. Segal and other early female vets helped prove women could do the job. (Photo Credit: Michigan State University, College of Veterinary Medicine) ‪#‎womenshistory‬ ‪#‎womeninSTEM‬
